Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are a lot of challenges when you're learning to play an instrument, from training your muscles to do things they wouldn't normally do, to understanding music theory. It becomes even more difficult when the instruments you're using have outlived their usefulness.
The students in this middle school guitar class are incredibly hard-working, dedicated, and kind.
We are in an urban district and for most of the students, this is the first time they've ever had the opportunity to learn to play an instrument. This is an extended learning time school so the students fortunately get to take guitar class as an elective, and although they started from ground zero on the instruments, they have developed as musicians rapidly over the last 3 months and are currently preparing for their first concert!
My Project
The guitars we're currently using come from various places. Some are old, run-down guitars that were lying around at the school. Some are borrowed from generous friends of the program, while many others are from my personal collection. The guitars we're requesting are 3/4 size acoustic guitars that are inexpensive, but of very high quality. They're easy to play, nice-sounding instruments and can handle the wear and tear that comes with being used every day in a middle school.
Learning to play an instrument is an unforgettable experience that these students thankfully have the privilege to have.
However, many of the guitars that were borrowed need to be returned by the end of the school year. In order for these students to realize their goal of learning to play guitar and to progress through their years in middle school, we need these instruments. Please help make this possible, and thanks everyone for helping us out!
