Inspiring Through the Physical and Social Sciences

My students need treasuries of storybook classics about dinosaurs, and animals. They also need art materials such as model magic and paint.

My Students

Do you remember that teacher who was able to incite your deep love of volcanoes? Or dinosaurs? Or timber wolves? They didn't simply tell you to read a book - they deepened your interaction with science through film, through art, or through exploration.

My kids are inspiring, resilient, and absolutely amazing.

In my classroom, the students comprise a community that largely reflects their own: diverse interests, backgrounds, and viewpoints that lead to unbelievable character and self-representation as they challenge each other to see the world in many different ways. The school in which I work is wonderfully sensitive to the needs of students and staff, providing us with attentive support and supplies for learning - however, budgets are limited, and a variety of materials to more deeply explore the sciences (both physical and social) is a costly desire.

My Project

As I stated previously, my kids are inspiring, resilient, and absolutely amazing. In my classroom, the students comprise a community that wants desperately to learn, particularly about the physical and social sciences. My students need materials that will allow them to deeply explore/interact the sciences (both physical and social) through film, through art, and through experimentation. We're asking for paints that allow them to express their ideas from science observations visually, books containing social science concepts, and educational films that build off of the classroom's nonfiction science texts. They also need pattern blocks to create mental correlations between patterns here and in nature, and batteries to help us run experiments - these are all materials necessary to meeting this goal. It is my most fervent wish that young children be given the opportunities to engage and dissect topics that they find interesting, such as wildlife, nature, emotions, and the past.

My students deserve to have their interests piqued.

Young children need to fall passionately, undeniably in love with learning and with school. If we are ever to curtail school drop-out rates, disparaging attitudes, and plummeting achievement, we must invest in the inspiration of our youngest learners. The value of imparting a love of the sciences, and therefore of coming to school every day is inherent: assisting students as they fall in love with learning.
