My Students

Students need to be able to articulate, communicate, and work with technology in the classroom. My students come from disadvantaged homes, lacking any knowledge of the English Language, and lacking any understanding of the mathematical processes.

The students that my classroom serves range from high ability kids to very low ability kids.

The reason for these issues is the exposure to other resources. Our school sits in a very diverse neighborhood and our school representation has 35 languages and over 120 different cultures existing and blending. Some of our students have never previously been in a classroom. However, our students are overcoming difficult obstacles, and challenging them is rewarding. Showing their work to the public and providing a platform that differentiates their learning is about as rewarding as you get as a teacher. Day in and day out, overcoming challenges calls for rewards. Being able to introduce technology, cameras, and collaborating with them brings about a whole new array of learning. My students need a camcorder because they are preparing to inform and defend mathematical numbers to the public via video.

My Project

Our students have been working tirelessly on preparing, researching and perfecting their oral defense. Students in the 6th grade are being asked to provide key concepts about numbers on the number line. These 6th graders have researched, written argumentative essays, practiced speeches, and are ready to tell the public and the community of NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) why the numbers 1 - 100 should be kept intact. Students have been learning about Prime and Composite Numbers, LCM and GCF, and Factors. Their goal was to gain as much knowledge about their number with facts, connections, and day-to-day interactions and present their findings to the board of NCTM. I put the project together and my students really think this is happening and I want to make it as realistic as possible. It's turning out to be an exciting unit in my classroom!

Every day teachers are told to have students synthesize information.

This is exactly what we are doing. We bring multiple subjects into this project (technology, writing, reading, and math) and are asked to provide deeper meaning. Students have met this goal and to show our excitement, we want it recorded and displayed so we can enjoy the fruits of our labor.
