I firmly believe that students learn science best when they are given an opportunity to experience it hands on. An incubator and humidity control system will allow my young scientists to explore embryology, life cycles and reproduction.
Everyday my 7th grade classroom in Maine is brought to life by my amazing group of scientists.
They love to ask questions, but more importantly they really love discovering the answers to their questions. My goal is to educate scientists not students, so with every unit we cover we focus on how scientists would approach the topic. For our life cycles unit we are going to be focusing on reproduction of various organisms and similarities and differences in how embryos form.
My Project
I am requesting a Brinsea 20 Octagon incubator and a Brinsea humidity control system. Both items are vital to the success rate of hatching chicks in a classroom setting. The Brinsea model incubators have automatic egg turners, exact temperature and humidity control (with the control system in place) and most importantly a large clear domed top that allows students to easily view what is happening in the incubator. I carefully reviewed many incubators and decided that with my classroom set-up and the variable temperatures that can happen in our building on occasion this incubator provides the most security for a successful hatch.
Being able to hatch chicks and perhaps other species (the requested incubator can also hatch duck, quail and goose eggs) would allow students to make observations and hypothesis's about the similarities and differences they expect to see.
The hands-on component will bring our embryology and reproduction studies during the unit to life!
