Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are on fire for playing the guitar and making music. There is never a time when there are not students in my room playing guitars. Before school, after school, and at lunch, my classroom is full and is a home away from home for most of my kids.
My students are all from low income families.
More than 80% of our students live at, or below the poverty line and qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Students who cannot afford their own lunch cannot afford their own instrument or the accessories that come with it. Many of our students are immigrants for whom English is not their first language as well. Music can help bridge the gaps that are left by poverty. It gives students purpose, and allows them to have attainable goals, and when they reach those goals, they feel better about what they are doing. Attaining musical goals encourages students to set and attain goals in every aspect of their lives.
My Project
The Guitar program at my school has nearly 100 members. Those students share 15 electronic tuners. The tuners we have at school have to remain at the school for the 5 different guitar classes we have. When students take their instruments home to practice, the instrument may or may not be in tune. Accurate tuning is essential. Most guitarists at this age and ability level cannot tune by ear. It can be very frustrating for a student to try to learn a passage with an instrument that is out of tune because what they are playing may not sound like it does in class. If we have more tuners, some of them would be available for checkout for when students take their instrument home. Students would be able to tune their instruments at home instead of only at school. Positive practice = improved playing = higher self esteem = success!
Donations to this project will enable my students' instruments to always be accurately in tune.
If one students' instrument is out of tune, the entire ensemble suffers. The more students have access to a tuner, the better they sound and the better the entire ensemble sounds. When the ensemble sounds good, students have a feeling of accomplishment. That feeling, stays with each student and translates into every other aspect of their lives.
