My students need 22 engaging and on grade level subscriptions to Scholastic News for first grade to integrate social studies topics into the reading curriculum.
My class is busy from the moment they walk in the door. They are enthusiastic and eager to learn.
The students learn a large amount of curriculum in a day and integrating technology keeps them motivated and engaged.
My students are in first grade.
They vary in ability levels not only academically but socially as well. I have two students who are in the beginning stages of english language acquisition. I have one student that is diagnosed with a learning disability and two others who are being monitored for learning disabilities. I have several students who are in need of emotional support. The rest of my students require challenging curriculum to continue to provide academic growth.
My school has 51% of the population on free and reduced lunch. Half of our students come from families that do not have the financial resources to help them. Many other families work paycheck to paycheck and have a difficult time providing anything extra. We also have an increasing number of English language learners and students with disabilities.
My Project
Our class is a blended learning classroom. The majority of our day consists of using technology to introduce or reinforce skills.
This year we will also be incorporating social studies instruction through reading. The Scholastic News magazine will provide an appropriate and engaging level of text to use in the classroom. The magazine incorporates reading skills that will help my students increase their comprehension as well as expose them to social studies topics aligned with our curriculum.
By using this resource they will also have access to the digital subscription. The digital piece will help to differentiate the lessons for my students. They will be able to access the text at home and at school. The digital form also allows for students to listen to the text which is beneficial for my struggling readers. It also has an online game for each lesson to check for understanding.
This project will help to incorporate socials studies into our reading curriculum by providing engaging text.
It will meet the needs of all the learners in my classroom through the use of both the digital and paper subscription. The students will increase word recognition, content vocabulary and comprehension with the use of this resource.
