About My Students

Technology, at its best, makes life better for people. I am very excited that my students want to use technology to become better writers! I was very impressed when Mya and Jayla, who both come from military families, came up with the idea of strengthening their writing skills using new technology.

I always try to instill this fact in my students: Quality writing is a process. It takes time and lots of effort; it's not done in one day. Part of the writing process involves revising and editing. These are crucial steps, but they are often overlooked by my students. Students often rush through these steps in order to quickly publish their writing; this often leads to work with several errors. To remedy this issue, I posed this question to my students: "How can we use technology to become better at revision and editing?" They put their heads together and came up with the idea of using technology to create revising and editing games. I'm very proud of their ingenuity with this project idea.

One academic skill that will help my students become college and career ready is being able to revise and edit their written work. The saying goes, "To err is human." This is 100% true. As imperfect beings, we are all bound to make mistakes - especially during writing! I quickly write emails often and I only notice mistakes after rereading once or twice. This habit of revising and editing is fairly commonplace among adults, but many of our students avoid it. Writing is an essential tool of communication for our students. They need to become better writers to thrive in a global economy. This project will surely strengthen their writing skills. A social-emotional skill that would be developed is teamwork. Students will have to work together to create educational games centered around revising and editing. The most rewarding educational games will be made by those groups who work best for the common good; this is what teamwork, whether in life or in the workplace, is all about.

In Their Own Words

Revising and editing is usually rushed when we write our essays. If we didn't rush through these important steps of the writing process, our essays would be better. We would be better writers. To address this problem, we want to use technology to create fun games involving revising and editing! By creating games about revising and editing, everyone would be involved because kids love to have fun. We would all become better writers if this idea comes to life!

This idea won't work unless we make fun games about editing and revising. We want to see which group of students in our class can make the best games. Our class will be divided into groups of 5, with each group having to work together to create a fun, educational game. It's up to us to make this project a success! We're up for the task!

Writing takes a lot of work. You can't create a great writing piece in one day. It's a process. The revision and editing steps are very important in that process, but our classmates struggle with it. If we made fun games about revising and editing, we really think it will make our classmates become better writers. With your help, we could make this happen!
