My classroom is a mandarin immersion classroom. The immersion program is aimed to have students achieving academic proficiency in English and Chinese at the same time. In the mandarin classroom, students learn different Chinese songs, Chinese characters and Chinese cultures every day.
The demographic of my students varies.
Most students' home language are English. I have 25 students (1st graders) in my class. They love learning Chinese and love doing arts/crafts associated with Chinese culture.
My school integrates native Mandarin speakers with non-native Mandarin speakers to promote academic achievement towards bilingualism for all students.
My Project
I am planning to do more arts with my students this year. However, we don't have enough art supplies.
For Chinese language, each character has different parts and each part has different meanings. Students love to see the evolution of the character. I would like to use the anchor chart to illustrate how the character changes from old times to the present.
Students also benefit from doing character worksheet to practice their Chinese writing skills. Unfortunately, the old printer in my classroom doesn't work. With a new printer, I can design different Chinese worksheet and print them out easily.
The academic benefits of an immersion education are far-reaching.
Research shows that the early acquisition of a second language impacts intellectual growth. It enhances students' creativity and problem solving skills. To help jumpstart the new school year, I hope my students will benefit the most from their second language learning journey. They will be able to fully understand the meaning of each character and to do different Chinese arts projects.
