Our students need to explore the uses of 3D printing as one of the major technologies of the 21st century. Using the skills to imagine, design, and create objects in 3D will require students to integrate multiple curricula areas. The 3D printer will be available to all classes for use.
We are a middle school serving 620 students in grades 6 - 8 in a small town in the eastern US.
We have a diverse student population with approximately 20% minority including African-American, Hispanic, Micronesian, Indian (from India), Ethiopian, Pakistani, Asian, and Russian. A little over 50% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Our students come from all over our county, many from outside of our specific school district. They come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We are known for encouraging our students to work as a family to support each others' successes both in the classroom and in extracurricular pursuits. Our dedicated teachers work as a team to help each student be the the best that they can in the classroom and in life.
My Project
Students and teachers will be able to use the 3D printer in all subject areas. They are only limited by their imagination!
Students can create geometric shapes, historical artifacts, art projects, body parts, fossils, 3D illustrations for creative writing, puzzles of the Periodic Table, robotics, just to name a few! The design process will require students to use math skills, technology, and social skills as they collaborate with others. As students support their learning with with the 3D printer, they really will make learning come alive!
3D printing is one of the biggest technology tools of the 21st century.
Someone recently said that they would change our world as much as the invention of the computer. If we are to prepare our students for the future, we need to provide them with the tools that will help them to be successful in the future. The 3D printer will allow students the skills needed to imagine, create, and problem-solve - all essentials for success in our rapidly changing world.
