"Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world." --Malala Yousafzai
In the ninth grade American History class at Adair Co R-I, we use a variety of materials to examine our nation's past, make connections between events, and evaluate lessons from the past.
Adair Co R-I is situated in a very rural area, thus placing a majority of my students at or below the poverty level.
Funding for things like new textbooks comes around only so often as the need is not limited to just the American History class.
My students are eager to learn, but that fire is extinguished when they are missing chunks of their textbook, they can hardly keep the book together in their backpack because the binding is falling apart, or the book's cover is completely detached from the book.
My Project
My students have expressly asked for new textbooks. They are so excited at the prospect of having books that function as they are supposed to. Our new textbooks will serve as a foundation from which we expand on through lecture, document analysis, and many other types of learning activities.
Having new textbooks will allow my students to use their book without fear of losing half of it, or having to borrow another person's book because they pages I have assigned are missing,
With the current state of their books, they are so worried about them deteriorating even more, but with new books they will be able to care for their books with pride and without fear.
Students learn better when they are clean, fed, and have decent materials to learn from.
No one wants to read from a dilapidated book. New textbooks would mean an even greater level of learning happening in my classroom. New textbooks would change their lives for the better by instilling a sense of pride in the materials they get to learn from. We are the Wildcats, a group of which can be referred to as a pride. Let's put the PRIDE back in Wildcat Pride and light a fire for learning!
