My students need two iPads with protective cases to help them identify pictures and objects used in everyday life to express wants, needs, and identify vocabulary in isolation/in books.
We are a structured teaching classroom that focuses on engaging students in activities that will enhance their ability to appropriately communicate their wants, needs, and academic abilities.
Our classroom is comprised of students with autism who are full of energy and enjoy exploring technology.
We have students who are non-verbal and need assistive technology in order to express themselves and to identify vocabulary taught during academic activities. We also have students who require picture supports to identify vocabulary terms and to answer questions about texts they read or texts that have been read to them. Our goal is to ensure that students learn and are able to effectively communicate their wants, needs, and ideas. We also want to ensure that they have access to tools that will allow them to share details about the academic subjects they learn in school.
My Project
Students will use iPads to:
-express themselves during meal times,
-express their wants and needs during structured and teaching activities,
-identify vocabulary taught to them in isolation,
-identify vocabulary taught to them in isolation and when given a choice of 2-6 responses,
-answer questions during the reading of texts,
-using pictures cues in isolation and when given a choice of 2-6 responses, and
-identify academic vocabulary including letters, numbers, colors, and shapes in isolation and when given a choice of 2-6.
This donation of iPads will give all the students in our class a chance to improve their receptive and expressive communication during functional and academic activities.
By increasing our students' ability to enhance their expressive and receptive language skills, we will also reduce their frustration levels and increase their time on task during academic activities.
