"Ice cream! Ice cream! Get your cold ice cream!" yells one student during outdoor play. In his hands are different colored play cones he imagines are various flavors of ice cream. He extends his hand and offers me the "purple flavor." I gladly accept. More and more kids begin selling the cold treat.
Welcome to Pre-K!
Come on in! We ask that you be respectful to those around you as well as the materials you play with. Language isn't an issue here, we're confident you'll pick it up quickly. We learn through play and exploration so you're required to bring your curiosity and imagination. Have fun!
Our kids are young, ambitious, and curious, but there's darkness lurking about that's much too serious. Pre-K is a time to explore and play, to imagine and create until the end of the day. But the trouble that's looming seems to be blooming. Academic rigor! Academic rigor! They're telling us to grow up much, much quicker. They want to prepare us to be college ready. We want to go to college, but at a pace that's steady.
Our parents can't help us out of the troubles that's lurking; it's not their fault! They're too busy working! It's up to you to help us keep our childhood we're about to lose, you wonderful people, the people of DonorsChoose!
My Project
Our pre-k approach to learning is heavily child centered, play and interest based learning. From year to year, our children learn different things. This occurs because different students are interested in different things. My first year as a pre-k teacher, our students loved robots. We used countless number of recycled materials to create robots.
During my second year, our students loved things that make us go. We studied various modes of transportation and created cars, airplanes, boats, and space ships out of cardboard. With a little imagination, anything is possible.
This year, ice cream is a reoccurring topic that is being brought up. I would like to show my students the process it takes to make the delicious cold treat known as ice cream. They believe it's something that comes directly from the store or the Mister Softee truck.
The materials I've requested will be used to create a unit of study about ice cream, how it's made, and everything ICE CREAM!
Have you every wondered how things worked?
For us, a quick search on Google will help us locate our answer. For children, however, that tool isn't as straightforward to them as it is for us. I want to bring active learning to our pre-k classroom and their interest in ice cream is the way to do it. What started as one child imagining he was an ice cream seller has turned into a big topic of interest. Many kids are now selling pretend ice cream during play. Help us turn this idea into reality!
