Do you remember getting a weekly magazine during elementary school? I do and I would love for my 5th graders to get one as well. Opening this magazine allows for you to read fiction and nonfiction plus after we use it at school they can share it with their family at home. Will you help us?
My students are excited and enthralled by the new books they read.
I'm a Reading Specialist at a Title 1 urban school just outside the nation's capital. These students come from very hardworking families, but they do not have extra money for one more cost at school such as a magazine subscription. Many of my students first language is not English. They have worked extremely hard and are now on the verge of reading at grade level. I need them to continue this rise to spark their interest in reading short fiction and nonfiction paired stories in this magazine plus be more exposed to plays and poetry. What fun we can have!
My Project
I work with all students in the 5th grade this year as a reading specialist. Working with the "seniors" of our school is always such a joy. Many students I have know since their pre-k days at our school and I want only success for them next year in middle school. Storyworks is such an engaging magazine and can reach all types of students. The magazine has paired texts that the students will have to explore one topic or theme through two or more genres, requiring students to synthesize, analyze, and make meaningful cross-genre connections. The wide range of genres includes informational and narrative nonfiction, short fiction, poetry, debates, and read-aloud plays based on myths, classic literature, and history. Storyworks also has an online component which brings even more in-depth support with videos as well as lower level versions of the same articles that are in the magazine.
The magazine will support my teaching of reading to these students as well as give them something to keep.
Storyworks will give each child their own copy of a magazine filled with high quality reading material several times during the school year.
Once we have used the magazine in the classroom the students can take the magazine home to share with siblings and foster a love of reading in the home. The magazine gives the students exposure to so many different genres of literature, there is something for everyone!
