We like to move it, move it during our math learning centers. The students need stationary seating to allow them to share and learn with great movement. Really, they need some non-traditional furniture that the backs can't be unscrewed or broken as they lean back to discuss math with a friend!
My students work in small learning groups for 3+ hours a day.
They talk, plan and meet all over the room. They drag chairs, stand behind the chairs, lean back in the chairs and the chairs are breaking. The HOKKI chairs are easily moved and the students can take them anywhere to work and think. My students are active. I am blessed to have many who are ADHD and ADD as well as on the autism spectrum. I have 4 students with IEP's. Two are gifted and two have learning needs. We never sit still. Our school is around 60% free and reduced lunch and we are a Title 1 School. There are approximately 450 students in our school and 104 are in 3rd grade. We have pre-K - 3rd grade in our school. Our school is a community of learners.
My Project
In our classroom, we do movement. We are not known for staying in one place during math learning stations. I move from station to station. My students need 4 15 inch HOKKI ergonomic stools to transform stationary sitting into an activity. I can see me grabbing a stool and pulling up to a table to work with a group. I can see the kids grabbing a blue stool to move to a group and then grabbing the red stool to come sit next to me. I can see no more screws falling out of the backs of chairs. I can see no more backs of chairs breaking off. I can see no more need to hunt for the missing tennis ball that goes on the chair legs. The students will be able to move the stools from the short tables to the tall tables. They can move around safely to go think with another group. The students can learn to share the chairs and improve their posture. Most of all the students can move and wiggle without concern of chair backs falling off!
With the movement of groups and the amount of students coming in and out of the classroom, our chairs began missing screws in the backs.
We lost 4 chairs this year. It is sometimes difficult for the students to move around in groups with the heavy chairs and my wigglers usually stand up at the tables. The HOKKI stools will allow for easy movement around the room and give my wigglers something to sit on when thinking in math groups.
