My students need over-the-seat book holders to keep books readily accessible, transportable and safe.

First, imagine yourself lost in a book; you are gripping the text, eyes darting quickly across the page as your hungry eyes devour the story. Oops! Now imagine that you are unable to get lost in a book or get in a book at all because there are none readily available at your desk....
My joyous class contains 19 of Chicago's bright and beautiful third graders.
These young scholars are 100% African-American, come from 100% low-income homes and are 100% deserving of a beautiful classroom environment that encourages learning. My students have a daily struggle against adversity. Although graduation rates for CPS have improved, the racial gap has widened, leaving black scholars behind (3/100 black men graduating from CPS will earn a B.A.). In the face of rising standards with Common Core, help inspire my students to beat the odds by providing them with a classroom that promotes and inspires learning!
Currently we are using Chicago Public Library reusable tote bags stapled to the backs of chairs; they rip easily under the weight of books, fall off as students pull out their texts and invariably find their way dangerously slipping around the floor. By purchasing a class set of over-the-seat book-bags students will be able to keep their books with them at their desk without compromising the safety of the classroom. Book bags ensure that students have books from our classroom library available at all times; keeping them separate from the notebooks, folders and papers in their desk makes finding them faster (saving instructional minutes) and protects the books to be read by future classes. Comparatively, the bags provided by Lakeshore are high quality and durable and will contribute to a beautiful classroom. Students' will see that their learning is valued because care has gone into creating a space that is visually appealing and conductive to student work.
Book bags will compliment the diverse library I have sought to provide for my students.
With a convenient pouch on the backs of students' chairs, kids will be able to have a variety of texts at their desks in easy access, saving valuable seconds during each transition. Additionally, as a teacher I will be able to quickly glance at what students are reading so that I can further support their interests or reorient students to more appropriate texts. Help me to help them!
