Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

On a recent homework assignment for my kindergarten students, I stated, "Write the titles of 3 books you have at home." Six of my students wrote 1 or 2 book titles. When I questioned each, the response was the same, "I don't have 3 books at home." I was saddened.

My students are excited to come to school each day.

They are eager to learn and love expressing kindness toward each other. Most come from families struggling to provide basics such as food and rent. Our school is a Title I elementary and almost all of my students receive free or reduced lunch.

My Project

Books are considered a luxury that many of my families can't provide for their child. I'd like to fill that gap. With 70 books from the Scholastic Teacher Store, my 22 students would each receive 3 books that they could call their own. They have worked so hard to learn to read this year and I'd love to provide books, at their level, for them to read this summer.

I can't imagine what it would have been like to have only 1 or 2 books at home when I was five or six.

Three books doesn't seem like much, but to some of my students, it would be a wonderful change.
