My students need dry erase markers to help one another using individual white boards. They can easily see each others work, identify errors, and self correct.
Do you remember learning a new skill or concept in math and then going home and realizing you really do not know how to do it? My students love to complete practice problems in class on large white boards. I love it because it allows me to quickly spot misconceptions and address them right away.
My school has a very diverse population with over 20 different countries represented; approximately 80% receive free and reduced lunch.
Parents in my community work long hours and are not always available to help their children with their homework. Sending students home with the confidence they need to complete their homework independently will make a huge difference in their confidence and attitude.
My Project
I call this "I Do, We Do, You Do." First "I" present the new concept, then "We Do" problems on the white boards together and finally they go home and practice what they have learned, "You Do". I have accumulated 30 large white boards over the years so I have enough for the whole class. What we need are dry erase markers which are expensive but well worth the cost. Students love working with white boards and basically there is 100% engagement. I can easily see what they are writing and correct any misconceptions before they begin. Students can also help each other as they can easily see each other's work, identify errors, self-correct, and share strategies with one another. The boards promote excellent mathematical conversations about how they approached the problem and the steps they took to solve them. This eliminates a lot of frustration students frequently experience when their answers are wrong and they do not know why.
My students need dry erase markers so they can experience success in math class everyday.
At this time, we use them sparingly. By providing every student with their own markers, they will have the opportunity to use white boards daily. That means 100% engagement, focused conversations on math which develops confident math students.
