A typical day in my Kindergarten begins with at least 24 five and six year old children ready and willing to develop the skills to learn about and succeed in our world. Access to and practice in using technology to learn and communicate is essential in today's world environment.
Our school population is mostly low income, with a high percentage of students coming from homes where English is not spoken.
For many of my students, Kindergarten will be the first formal school experience they will have. It is important to make this first experience as engaging and enjoyable as possible. While many of my students have lots of experience with technology, quite a few have never had access to technology at home.
My Project
When children are having fun learning, they don't even realize they are working hard to learn. Technology hooks children into working hard in a fun, non-stressful way. My class will use the iPad minis during small group and whole group time across the curriculum. The children will be using them during our Literacy Block as an independent work station to access reading programs and apps, and ebooks. Groups will be using the iPad minis during writing time to begin simple research projects, and write simple stories. Children will use the iPad minis during guided math time to practice their math critical thinking skills. Music apps and art apps can help provide additional enrichment. The use of the VGA adapter with my class projector extends access to learning through technology to the whole class at one time.
By supporting our classroom with iPad minis, you will be helping create a fun, engaged learning environment with technology children may not have at home.
There are countless apps available to support children's learning at their own pace in an engaging manner. Children will grow in independence and take charge of their own learning. The solid foundation provided in Kindergarten using technology will follow our children through the grades, and into the workplace.
