Are you able to be a part of our recovery from Hurricane Sandy? Many of our books, backpacks, and journals were lost in the devastation of this storm. We are trying to get back to "normal" and are in need of some new supplies.
My students are eight and nine years old and come from an area on the east coast of New Jersey that was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
We have worked hard on developing strong reading habits since the beginning of the school year. Many materials such as book bags and books were lost in the flooding that accompanied the storm. In developing a strong reading foundation, my students take home at least three books each night which they keep in a protective bag.
Reading is an integral part of each and every school day in our classroom. Having the necessary materials to maintain our routines will help us return to normalcy.
My Project
Since my students take home at least three books, a folder, a reading pouch, and a response journal, many of my classroom materials were lost in the flooding. The resources I selected include some great fiction and nonfiction titles so that our supply of reading material can be replenished. The composition books will enable my students to continue to respond to the great literature they are reading and to develop essential writing skills. Families were concerned about getting to safety, and many books and book bags were left behind in homes that were destroyed.
My students are able to select the books on their individual levels that they would like to read at home each evening.
It is essential to have enough books on hand to enable the children to find selections of interest. Some of my students were quite concerned about the loss of their reading material so the donation of new supplies will be both educationally and emotionally beneficial. The road to recovery will be a long one but replacement materials will alleviate some of the difficulty.
