My students need your generous support to attend a once in a lifetime excursion to Hurricane Island where they will participate in field study and experimentation
The highly motivated students in my Junior and Senior Chemistry classes have some of the most interesting and intriguing questions. We challenge each other and recognize together that life is full of adventure, learning and opportunity.
My students attend the largest high school in our city and come from a highly diverse range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
They are hard working, eager to learn, high achieving individuals. Our school is located in a very diverse region of the city and therefore our students speak many different languages and come from many different countries. The school building is over-crowded, under-funded and in considerable need of an overhaul, as much of its interior has not been updated for fifty years.
My Project
The Seniors who will be attending this trip are going to be introduced to field scientists that work on Hurricane Island. In order to meet one of the requirements of their rigorous academic program they will first learn about Hurricane Island sustainable technology, geology, botany, ornithology, fresh water, and marine ecology environments. Students will then design an experiment around questions they generate from the first few days of discovery, and Hurricane Island Foundation staff and school faculty will help facilitate their experimental design ideas, materials needed, and study site identification. Students will collaborate to design a comparative, baseline, or other study.
These donations will pay for students' full experience for one of the four and a half days on Hurricane Island.
This experience will be like no other experience they will have in high school science, and possibly beyond.
My hope is that some students will return home from this trip with a mindset that sees the future as ripe with possibilities. I know that each of them is going to make a significant difference in their communities as an adult, and I see this trip as a way to foster that mentality in them. I want them to become innovators and changemakers and believe that each of them has that potential.
