Hunger Games: Feeding the Hunger for Reading

My students need individual copies of The Hunger Games to successfully transition to the new Common Core Standards with an engaging text!

My Students

Typically, teachers don't like students to get in trouble, but this reading teacher wants a novel that students won't be able to put down even in other classes! With the change to common core curriculum next school year, the rigor has increased and engaging texts are the only way to bridge the gap,

My school is one of the most diverse in the state.

We draw a large number of English Second Language (ESL) students. 73% percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch meaning their families do not have the extra funds to purchase novels. Given the diversity of the students, it is essential to find texts with a variety of cultures and socioeconomic status characters present.

My Project

Many students walk into my 8th grade English Language Arts class without ever having completed a novel. As the states across the nation increase the rigor with the new common core standards, I'm faced with the challenging of taking non-readers to even higher standards. The first step in the process is to eradicate the "non". An intriguing and well written novel such as The Hunger Games is an excellent way to motivate students to engage in literature and explore concepts that transfer to science and social studies classrooms. Also, the common core requires students to analyze how a written text is interpreted differently for a filmed or live performance. The recently released film version of The Hunger Games will allow me to capitalize on the popularity of the film in motivating classroom learning. In addition, our library has several copies of the subsequent books to sustain the reading momentum further into the school year.

As the first unit of the school year, this project will allow previously unsuccessful students to start the year off on the right foot.

Studies have shown that students who experience authentic success are more likely to develop internal motivation and perform better across the board. Please consider donating to the project to help two classes of struggling readers (each year) to develop a love of reading that will propel their academic success for years to come!
