This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Why do I have to learn math? I'll never use it!" Tying math in with real-life experience is the best way to engage students in learning...I would love to invite my students on a field trip where they can use pedometers and algebra to measure and calculate the length of the Brooklyn Bridge
My spectacular students are teenagers in a self-contained special education classroom in a special education school.
I teach my ninth and tenth graders English, Global Studies, and Life Science in a curriculum modified for their academic delays. We are located in a high-need public school in NYC. Most students in my school qualify for free lunch. These students are challenged by learning disabilities as well as emotional disturbance; but instead of just giving in--my kids rise to the occasion and strive for the pride and security a high school diploma can bring! These young adults work hard to make more of themselves and conquer their academics!
My Project
Pedometers are a fantastic way for my students to use algebra in an authentic real-life experience and measure the length of the Brooklyn Bridge as they walk it. Water and snacks like granola bars and Fig Newtons would fuel our journey. Students will count their steps, measure their stride and estimate the full length of the bridge. Math isn't just for the classroom, not just for dry word problems...I'm excited to give my students proof that math is more than just a class they have to pass.
How often are students given the chance to take their lessons outside of the classroom?
Please give my kids the chance to see how useful math can be in life, and make learning an experience instead of a chore.
