Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The world of music is opening up to my students. They are ready for the next level of musicianship and exploring the world beyond their neighborhood.
We are a Title I school with 85% of the student population qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
Many of our students have never left our city, let alone the state. Now, our choir has the opportunity to sing a performance of the Mozart Requiem at Carnegie Hall! In addition to singing, the students will also explore the capital city of arts and culture in the United States - New York City - perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them. They each face unique personal and family challenges. Half of the students have tragically lost a parent and their families are working very hard to give them every chance to succeed in the face of many factors working against them. I know that our school community and the community at large can help them achieve that goal.
My Project
These singers have completely embraced the challenge of studying the Mozart Requiem, a pillar of classical music. While this piece will push them musically, the opportunity to sing in the Distinguished Concerts International New York performance of the Mozart Requiem at Carnegie Hall WILL change these students' lives. The musical skills and knowledge they will gain while studying this piece will greatly enhance their ability to study music after high school. The experience of traveling and performing will create ideas and opportunities for them that they do not yet even know exist.
Not only does this performance benefit the students directly involved, it benefits our entire community.
Four years ago, our school faced a federal turn around after years of low test scores and gang activity. The school we have now does not even resemble where it was five years ago - we have made tremendous strides. But we face the challenge of convincing our neighborhood that our school is now a model of success. This performance will show our community the amazing things our students can do!
