My Students

Welcome to the.....Reading Zone! A zone where students love to read. Where the language of books is talked frequently. Where book talks to the class are a favorite part of the day, and individualized reading time is eagerly anticipated. The culminating need of the Reading Zone? More books!

My school is a Title I school in Georgia.

I have a very eclectic group with needs ranging from gifted, to speech, to special services, to hearing impaired. This class came to me basically reading story books and little else. Many of these students have had no access to books in the home. Books were something you checked out once a week because every one else did. Now, to see the joy of reading blossom within their minds and souls is amazing. They read chapter books, give book talks, take their books to lunch, just to name a few changes. It has been so exciting to see this transformation. They can even talk authors like pros!

My Project

The resources I have chosen all pertain to enhancing our Reading Zone. I have chosen a book center to make book selection an easier and more pleasant process. There is even a place to hold our big books which, as of now, are propped up behind a book shelf. I have also chosen a table top writing center because we complete reading responses to the books we have read. I would like to make these responses into books for students to look through to help in their book selection and I feel this writing center would place everything needed in one place. I have chosen a cd player for books on cds used for listening centers. Right now I am using an old boom box from home. The rest of my resources are books, books, and more books. My children are so turned onto reading. Now I just need to have a variety of books available for selecting!

I submitted a project back in the fall called Hooked on Books and was fully funded. I cannot tell you how my children have loved these resources. The children in my class have certainly been impacted by this generosity. But it doesn't stop there. The joy of reading lasts a lifetime. The materials so generously donated would be next to impossible for me to provide on my limited salary. So thank you on behalf of myself, my profession, and my students.
