Writing isn't a passive process. Some students need to move their bodies to get their ideas moving too.
How many of us sit and read in a hard chair at home? If we want students to be readers, they should have a spot that makes reading inviting.
My students are sophomores and seniors from four towns in central Maine.
Many seniors will admit to me that they haven't finished a book in years. Many students find school a struggle because they don't want to sit all day. These additions to my classroom will hopefully create a space where students can create lifelong reading and writing habits.
My Project
I emphasize the writing process in my teaching and understand that for many students, that process won’t happen if they have to sit still. Hokki stools will allow students to sit and be active at the same time. These stools are unique as they transform stationary sitting into an activity, and they are ideal for brainstorming and writing sessions. Students can sway and wiggle while sitting in these stools and not disrupt the other students.
For seniors, I want them to leave high school as confident, independent readers. This means I utilize choice reading, portfolios, and workshop time in class. I am transforming a section of my room to include a classroom library and I would love to finish it with comfortable seats for students to sit with a good book.
The funding for this project will make a big difference in my classroom environment and create a space where every student can work to his/her potential.
Having more options for places students can work not only makes the room more inviting, but a productive space as well.
