Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Little league, Pop Warner, club sports are organizations my students are limited to in our community. The majority of our students do not have the opportunity to be a part of these types of sporting events. My physical education class, with limited equipment, is the closest experience they come by.

My high school students come from a low economic background.

The majority of my students receive the free or reduce-price lunch program and are obligated to get a job to help support their family. Our high school is a small school of about 1400 students. We have been categorized as a low performing school. With all the negative outlooks, our school holds true to one great tradition, and that is pride. Our students may not have all the resources or equipment to succeed at a certain task, but they never give up. They make the best with what they have, and continue to want to learn and succeed with any challenge thrown their way.

My Project

It is already hard to inspire students to want to participate in high school physical education. With these new pieces of equipment, the students may feel a sense of encouragement to want to play softball. Softball is an activity that is played with family members, friends and competitive teams. By introducing softball to the students and using the appropriate equipment, it may enhance their understanding of and interest in the game. The equipment I have now are bats that are used for smaller children, bases, and three buckets of softballs. With these limited resources it is challenging to inspire these students to want to play. The new equipment will motivate students to want to take part in this sport. The pitching machine will be useful in hitting drills and the new bats will allow students to experience hitting a ball with the appropriate equipment.

This project is important to me because I am trying to change the views of physical education in high school.

I want to give my students the opportunity to experience playing sports at a level they would have to pay for outside of high school. My students would be so grateful to utilize this equipment because this is the closest most of them will come to being a part of a team. This donation may be the stepping stone our department needs to build a successful physical education program.
