Mrs. Love from Kent WA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Historical Fiction that Matters

My students need multiple copies of three great historical fiction books by modern authors (Chains, Fever 1793, and Sophia's War: A Tale of the Revolution) that tell tales of diversity from an historical context.

My Students

Currently the seventh grade students at my school have little access to historical fiction that supports diversity and inclusion for American History. Great writers such as Laurie Halse Anderson and Avi would be a welcome addition to our classroom libraries.

Our students are a highly diverse, creative, and have often spoken about their desire to read real books.

Reading historical fiction helps support their curiosity and engagement with their histories, and understand that more voices than just the ones written about in textbooks need to join the conversation.

My Project

Students will use these books to understand a variety of perspectives about historical context. They will learn that voices throughout history are able to find an audience with a knowledgeable, research-based writer of historical fiction. Historical fiction does something realistic or fantasy cannot do, and that is to take history and bring it to life in context.

Please make a donation to my students.

They are currently feeling the effects of shifts in instructional strategies, yet I strive to provide them access to diverse and multi-cultural lenses using engaging historical fiction. Thank you for your consideration.
