High Schoolers Mastering Scholarly Academic Research Project

My students need a computer in our classroom for their research in History and Social Studies.

My Students

My students must share their academic computer lab with students doing required state testing. So, I am requesting a classroom computer so students may do academic research and writing in Social Studies and History. They'll research topical facts and create college quality papers and presentations.

Our school is a mid-sized rural high school that serves the children of a traditional agricultural community.

About 50% of students have computers at home, 50% do not. The age of my sophomores makes most of them bus riders. They cannot access the local library independently, or remain at the school's library beyond the scheduled school day. As a result, Internet research, word processing and desk-top publishing are not homework tasks that I can equally demand of each of them. So, I am designing my instruction to integrate student research in World and American History into my classroom. Sadly, my classroom computer is unavailable to students. I also cannot bring them to the library or computer lab often enough to do independent projects. This request for a computer is the first in a series in an attempt to install five computers in my classroom so that students can learn academic research under my supervision and produce history projects that would be successful in a higher education setting.

My Project

My vision is to utilize the table space around the walls of my room as computer work stations where groups of students can rotate access to them to search the web, organize information, compile and publish: essays, papers, charts, slide shows, and presentations. Topics related to the history content we are covering in each particular unit of instruction present research challenges almost every day. So far this school year we have been compelled to learn more about are Engineering Methods in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Farming Crops and Methods, Comparative Literature between Ancient Peoples, Farming Practices of Ancient Civilizations in North America, Modern Day Examples of The Columbian Exchange, African-American Colonial Life. Topics present themselves on an almost daily basis and any time students take the opportunity to actually follow a research path they themselves develop, they are greatly increasing their level of learning, and even more so when a teacher provides support/structure.

Many students in our district are expected to go to college.

Even the children of farmers stand to gain by completing certificate or degree programs at state college or technical schools. As most students here at are the first in their families to be going to college, special attention must be paid to their preparedness. Students need to understand what is expected of them academically, and these resources can provide crucial coursework experiences that will get them ready.
