Many of us don't think of notebooks as a need or a barrier to learning; but for my 9th graders, spending $3 or $4 on a graph paper notebook is simply not a reality.
South is the non-English, non-Spanish speaking magnet school in the region.
The majority of the 9th graders that I teach are refugees, for many of them, this is the first time they have ever been in a formal school. Each and every one of these students is ridiculously exited to learn, they just need a little bit of help with resources.
My Project
For the majority of my students money is a serious issue and we count on donations from the community to allow these students to have simple items such as pencils and paper. In particular I would like to get all of my students working with graph paper composition notebooks. All of their math work will be in one place and they can learn to take notes and use these notes as a resources.
By asking for these 300 notebooks, this will allow each of our 9th graders to get one graph paper notebook for their Algebra 1 class.
These students want to learn. They want to excel and go to college and many of them come from families that don't even have an elementary school education. These notebooks are just one step that will help our students to learn how to organize and become stellar students.
