Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Senior English class involves reading many classics of British literature. A struggle that I encounter every year is making these stories relevant to my students. My hope is that students will have an appreciation for these timeless stories while drawing their own connections to their lives.
I teach in an inclusion setting.
My students all have varying reading and writing levels. It is not out of the ordinary to have students with extremely low reading skills in the same class with students that are reading at grade level or above. My students are caring and have a sense of community. They are willing to help each other out, and take on a "we're in this together" mentality to get through their senior year. They continue to amaze and surprise me everyday.
My Project
I am requesting 20 copies of the graphic novel version of Pride and Prejudice. These comic pages will help struggling readers keep up with the story of Pride and Prejudice. Many of my students have trouble keeping track of the events of the novel, and the sequential art of the comic will help to literally show to events and emotions of this novel. The amount requested will allow me to pair my students up to read together and stimulate conversation. The materials will serve as supplemental material to the reading of the novel. It will help those that have difficulty with comprehension and serve as an excellent source to review for other students.
Pride and Prejudice has traditionally been a struggle for students.
I envision these materials as a great help for the students to see the action of the novel. I feel that the students will not "tune out" as they will have materials that present a classic novel in a familiar format. I hope that these materials will instill a love of the novel and prompt my students to seek out others classics in novel and graphic novel format.
