Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Science can be such a wonderful way to discover the world. My students will be part of the generation that embraces science to help solve the world's problems. They will experience through hands-on activities and explorations and reading to whet their appetites for learning more about science.
My students are from economically challenging environments, but who have the potential to be great learners.
They are inquisitive and creative but lack many experiences of their peers. They get excited about learning when given the tools and opportunities to learn. I know that with proper direction and exposure these brilliant students can shine, and more importantly develop the desire to learn more about the world around them. They attend a school that is on the rise and noted for its dedication to teaching children because we recognize they have the capability to contribute successfully to the world. Their culture is primarily Latino and Afro-American and so they bring rich experiences and struggles to the classroom that can be garnered to make them successful. They love reading, although many from both cultures struggle with vocabulary and concepts because of their lack of exposure to many environments. However, they are eager learners.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of materials that will help students do more than just read about science, although I have included some readers because they target specific topics. I want my students to have as many hands-on experiences to develop concepts and experiences they generally might not consider. For example, students see crystals all the time, salt and sugar, but imagine their reaction when they actually grow some themselves! What an opportunity to get them excited about learning more about the uniqueness of crystals. Or having the opportunity to see prepared slides of things one cannot see with the naked eye. What a totally new world they will discover. I picked activities and books that would pique their interest, especially for things they may already see, like the sun, moon and stars, and then expand on that knowledge and expose them to the uniqueness of the solar system, for example, that they cannot readily see.
The difference this project will make is that it will help deepen students' understanding of the world around them.
The wonderful thing about science is that it is everywhere, seen and "unseen", and plays such a large part in everyday life. Science provides so many opportunities to teach children about concepts, vocabulary and phenomenon that exists right in their back yard, so to speak. I love science, and know that I can use science as a springboard to inspire students to learn.
