My students need 5 story books with audio CDs, so that they can develop a joy for reading and have equal opportunities to discuss literature with a small group of peers.

My Students

Books are magical things. They have the ability to take us to far away places and capture our imaginations. Unfortunately, my students have yet to realize the magical properties of books and many have given up on ever being proficient readers.

My students all have been diagnosed as having cognitive impairments.

They are hard working friendly 8th graders. There are currently 17 students in my self contained special education classroom and we are crammed into a very tiny space. Each student is unique and brings different skills to the table, meaning every lesson includes 2 or 3 different activities at a time. I supply all classroom supplies for my students and books are a rare commodity. Unfortunately many of my students have given up on reading. My students lack confidence, when it comes to reading and many of them simply shutdown and refuse to try. Having books on tape and being able to set up listening centers, would open the door to activities and discussions that have yet to be possible in our classroom.

My Project

Creating listening centers where my students can listen and follow along to engaging, imaginative, and interesting stories will open a whole new world to them. Students who have never been able to read an entire book, regardless of how short it was, will now be able to finish a story and discuss it with their peers. They will be able to complete comprehension tasks and engage in reading reflection tasks.

These resources will build my students' confidence levels concerning reading, which will have an enormous impact in their academic journeys and the rest of their lives.

Above all, these resources would instill in my students a love for books that will help turn them into lifelong learners!
