Where did you learn about healthy eating? This past week I read a book about nutrition to my students and I don't think I have ever had a group so excited to learn more about healthy eating! I was just previewing it and they wanted to learn more right then and there.
My first grade students are eager learners who work really hard.
They come from a variety of diverse backgrounds and many of my class come from low-income families. Our school values being green and even has a school garden. Our class has visited the garden a few times and tasted a few things from it. Additionally, a group of parents has been sending in healthy snacks and we can't wait to learn more about healthy eating.
My Project
I am requesting books about the food groups that are at my students reading abilities for a few reasons. Many of the books I currently own have a lot of text and are very long. I have also run into this problem with library books. These books are great and have a lot of information, but it can be overwhelming for a first grader to read them. This is where you can help us! These books about nutrition and the food groups can be read by my students throughout our day. I will be able to do a reading group where each student reads a book about one of the food groups and then shares out to the rest of the group. We will also be able to read them during science. While reading these books my students can practice their comprehension skills for nonfiction books. Nonfiction books are harder to understand so these books will give them more practice.
Donating to my project will have a great impact on my students.
Not only will they be able to read books about the food groups and learn why it is important to eat healthy and stay active, but they will also be able to practice their reading skills. It's a win-win situation!
