My students need security cables and padlocks to secure new iMacs from theft at our inner-city school where security of technology is a huge concern so that we can make awesome digital art!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students have a story to tell, but many of them enter my class saying that they can't "do" art - they are intimidated to try to turn their feelings and thoughts into an image. By the end of the year they are not afraid of failure and they have confidence in their abilities as artists.
My students attend a Title 1 public high school in Washington, DC, whose low standardized test scores earn us the distinction of a "focus school".
But the reality is that my students have courage, and many of them overcome obstacles we can't even dream of in order to just walk through the school doors in the morning. Homelessness, substance abuse and violence are ever present for some of our students and figure heavily into our discussion of how we can help our students as a school. Our demographic is 98% African American, and 99% free and reduced lunch, with a 29% special education population. Truancy and low graduation rates are a major concern of our high school and so our major initiatives focus on attendance interventions, and family engagement, as well as promoting high graduation rates and college acceptance. Through all of this, we have a world-class marching band which brings pride to the school, and we have made major strides in all areas of the school.
We have acquired 11 wonderful new iMacs from District of Columbia Public Schools, which will allow our students to participate in digital media and photography classes. Students will have access to the entire Adobe CS6 suite including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. My students need padlocks to secure new iMacs from theft. Students will be using these programs to create a mural for the student center of our new high school that the city is building. However, theft of technology has been a major concern at our school, and break-ins (especially around holidays) have led to the disappearance of computers and digital projectors. I want to make sure that these wonderful computers are secure so that our students can enjoy and use them for years to come.
I have been waiting to use these computers in my classroom until I was sure that we could keep them safe even if school security is breached so that all of our students can enjoy them without worry that the computers will disappear mid-way through the year.
It may seem trivial, but we don't always have access to the resources that we need, so when we do get them, we protect them dearly. Thank you so much for helping us safeguard these valuable resources that we have been so lucky to receive!
