Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you remember a time where you were so excited to listen to a great story and follow along in the book? Can you imagine being a second grader learning to read in a different language than they speak at home? This is what my students experience every day and they need fluency support.
We are a Title I school in rural North Carolina where 70% of my class speaks English as a second language, and a whopping 96% receive free or reduced lunch.
My students are enthusiastic and eager to learn. They come to school with open minds and hearts ready to see what adventure we will go on next
My Project
These audio books would provide students the ability to hear proficient readers and correct spoken language. Not only will it improve their personal fluency ability, but it will help build up their vocabulary and verbal skills. During our literacy block time in our school day, students have the opportunity to Listen to Reading with our new listening center. We only have 3 or 4 audio books right now, so soon we will not have a new book in our listening center. Students need exposure to books on a variety of levels, topics, and genres. Students are able to comprehend higher level texts when they are read aloud. This will increase higher thinking for my students and help them reach their goal of being grade level readers.
My students find being below and well below grade level in reading common.
These audio books will help give them the opportunity to practice better fluency skills, higher comprehension skills, and verbal skills. Not only will it help them in reading, but it will help them in all areas because reading is something we always have to do!
