"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
My bilingual second graders come to school each day ready to learn and grow, and they are especially excited about reading and writing in two languages.
We are part of a growing Dual Language program at a neighborhood public school in Astoria. All of my students qualify for free lunch, and most come from low-income households where they do not have access to high-quality books.
My Project
A day does not go by without a student asking, "Can we change our books today?" Students carry baggies of English and Spanish books to and from school so that they always have a "just right" book to read. Unfortunately, my Spanish library is lacking, with most of the kids having read all the offerings already. I want to fuel their hunger for reading -- not halt it! I was humbled to have my last request for Spanish books funded within hours, and am now hoping to further grow to our classroom library with the addition of two more series (Henry & Mudge and Frog & Toad) as well as a set of Spanish-English dictionaries to help students read and write in both languages with increased independence.
By empowering our students to read, write, and speak in two languages, we are equipping them to be lifelong global learners.
It warms my heart to see that others in our community support bilingualism and biliteracy, and I know it makes my students (and their families) happy, too!
