I teach kindergarten for a school with a very diverse population. My classroom is composed of over 75% ELL students. I have 4 computers available in my classroom for the students to utilize. Another piece of technology in the classroom would be beneficial to the students.
Many of my students do not have a computer in the home or access to a computer and the only time they are emerged in technology is in the classroom.
The students are very eager and anxious to use the technology. On average the students have the opportunity to use the computers in the classroom 2-3 times per week. Another piece of technology in the classroom could potentially increase this number to 4-5 times a week.
My Project
I am requesting a tablet for the students in my classroom to use. Students will use the tablet during literacy centers as well as independent learning time for practice with letter recognition, sight word fluency, reading and listening to books appropriate to their learning needs. They will have the opportunity to read books on their reading level, listen to stories, practice sight words and practice writing skills by using multiple apps on the table. The tablet is another piece of technology that can help the students practice fluency, repetition, and memory recognition.
Donations for my project will allow the students to interact with new technology and use a variety of strategies and tools to become better readers, writers as well as improve social skills amongst their peers and adults.
