Do you know how wet and cold it gets during the fall and winter in Seattle? We need great games for our 3-5th grade students to learn to play cooperatively during enrichment time and during miserable rainy day recesses! I want to encourage board games instead of video games!
Our students are in the general education, highly capable program or special education setting.
This is my first year working with fourth and fifth graders from the district's highly capable program.
This school year, I will be teaching an enrichment clusters at the end of each trimester, where any 3-5th grade student can come learn and have time to start and finish a high-interest board game in a small group setting. I'd also love to teach them to students to engage them during rainy day recess times.
My Project
Envision students laughing, thinking aloud, and working cooperatively while playing games that are NOT solitary and on the computer, but in small groups.Imagine friendships blossoming inside over a cooperative game board as the rain pours outside on the blacktop of the playground. Research shows that all students benefit from playing board games. It increases social skills, empathy, strategic thinking and self-esteem for children to play board games. All of these games including the train/geography game Ticket To Ride, and all of the Family Pastime cooperative games will be wonderful learning tools to increase social learning and practice the speaking and listening Common Core Standards for 3-5th grades.
