Help Us Digitally Write about our Teddy Bear Sleepover!
My students need an iPad. We will use this technology to work through the writing process collectively. We will digitally illustrate and publish our work in iBooks.
You are invited to a teddy bear sleepover! Each year our five year olds bring their teddy bears to school to spend the night. The children return the next day to find their bears engaged in some sort of mischievous activity. These experiences and many others become motivation for WRITING!
I teach kindergarten at a school with large economic disparities.
Our school district does not have the proper resources required of a technological age. Half of my students live below the poverty line and cannot afford the latest technology at home. We have wonderful diversity, but our school is located in a neighborhood far away from where many students live. Many students are bussed to school from several miles away. We don't hear their voices the way we should.
My Project
My plan is to use the iPad to wirelessly connect to the large LG television screen in my classroom. My plan is to integrate the teaching of writing with technology while working collaboratively as a class. I will "share the keyboard" with my students. I will instruct them on keyboarding skills, spelling, punctuation, etc while we share the responsibility of telling a story. Upon completion of our text, we will include it in the iBooks app. Children will be able to read it again and again!
This is my strategic plan, but we will use the iPad everyday in every subject formally and informally. Students will be able to use it individually, with a partner, as well as with the entire class. I will be able to listen to student recorded discussions so that I can better plan for oral language instruction. The possibilities are endless!
I would like students to use the iPad as a tool to share their ideas and cultures while gaining skills.
The children will learn how to think digitally so that as technology evolves and becomes more sophisticated, they will be able to adapt. They will learn how to access the iPad's recording devices (audio, video, photographic) and word processing programs, too.
