Help Turn Struggling Readers into Successful Leaders!
My students need fiction and nonfiction reading passages, reading games to make learning fun, comprehension and poetry journals, and sight word activity centers.
Benjamin Franklin once said "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Students need to be involved with hands on experiences in order to learn and grasp concepts. Through the use of hands on activities in the classroom, we are guiding them in the right direction.
The students in my class receive intensive intervention in the area of reading.
Most of them entered the first and second grade unable to read at their grade level. It is my job to fill in those reading gaps in order to bring them up to speed.
The students in my class are low performing 1st and 2nd graders. They cannot pay for private tutoring if they require it. Most don’t even have the money to purchase their own school supplies, so that burden falls on the teacher. Many of the students come from single parent homes and the sole-provider is on public assistance.
Many of my current students are diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and struggle to maintain their focus. Even though they struggle, they want to work hard and succeed. As their teacher, I want to make this possible for them and support them in every way. Many of my students need the ability to move and work, allowing them to stay focused as they learn.
My Project
My students this year are a diverse group of gifted children who learn in different ways. Because of their diversity in learning styles, they need diversity in materials used for instruction. My students will use the Phonics Tales reading passages to practice reading with their newly learned phonics sound. They will use the story sequence tiles to help them put a story in proper sequence and use the tiles to actually write the story. The sight word learning centers will help improve sight word retrieval and therefore improve reading fluency. All of the materials I am requesting offer hands on activities that make reading fun!
The materials I am hoping to receive will keep students engaged and excited about reading.
Most of the students are already frustrated when it comes to reading so we, as teachers, need to find fun and exciting ways to teach so that students can feel confident again! I appreciate any donations possible, and I thank you in advance for your consideration to this project!
