"To learn to read is to light a fire." - Victor Hugo. My students with disabilities love to listen to books and have a desire to read, but they cannot read. Please help provide a literacy program to support them in their reading development so that they can one day read their favorite books.
I teach in a severely impaired special day classroom in an urban setting.
My students are in kindergarten to 2nd grade with disabilities ranging from autism, orthopedic impairments, and intellectual disabilities. The majority of my students cannot talk and use other forms of communication such as visual aids and devices to communicate. More than half of my students receive free or reduced school lunch, and 100% are English Language Learners.
Even though our students experience things differently than their peers, they strive to learn and work hard to improve their skills. They are smart, full of energy, excited to learn, and determined to do well. These students have the ability to learn when given appropriate materials and modifications. My students’ favorite part of the day is Story Time. Even though they cannot read independently, they enjoy listening and answering questions about the stories read aloud. When they recognize words in books, they feel proud to have read a word.
My Project
The current curriculum provided by the district is not sufficient enough to help teach my students learn how to read. My students have the desire to read and they need your generosity to provide them with appropriate materials.
I am requesting the Early Literacy Skills Builder program, which is a researched-based systematic and direct instruction that teach both print and phonemic awareness. It is aligned to the common core standards and includes scripted lessons, least-prompt strategies, teachable objectives, built-in lesson repetition, and ongoing assessments. This program is great for my students because the program is specifically designed to teach reading to students with moderate to severe disabilities. With this program, the students will learn basic reading skills and apply it to the books that they desire to read. This program will help boost my students' confidence, independence, and academic achievement.
Every child, especially students with disabilities, deserves a place to learn, feel safe, and develop to their full potential.
This project will have a huge impact on my students. By donating to this project, you will help provide an appropriate literacy program so that every student, including students with disabilities, can read books in the future. What is a better gift than teaching a child learn how to read?
