My students need help with their math fact fluency. We would like to get 24 Hello Numbers books and 15 plush number sets for our K-2 classroom friends to use with math mentors.
My 4th grade students love to learn by teaching others. One area we know we need to improve is math fact fluency. My students have been lucky to learn to love numbers with the Hello Numbers Plush Number Buddies, and we want to use these buddies to teach our K-2 school friends to love numbers, too!
Our school is in Gwinnett County, Ga, which is part of the Atlanta metro area.
Our school has a diverse student population in a suburban setting. Roughly, we are 25% each African American, Asian, Caucasian, and Hispanic. Although, many of our students receive free and reduced lunches, we are not a Title I school. Therefore, we depend on our PTA to support many of the "extras" available to our students. Our teachers also spend a lot of their own money on the students.
One of our school's areas of focus this year is mathematical fact fluency. We realize that research indicates students' number sense abilities, as early as the end of Kindergarten, may predict their future math achievement. We want our students to not only become proficient with numbers, but to also be comfortable and confident with everything numbers so they will be viable in a technologically competitive world.
We think the Hello Numbers Books and Plush Numbers will benefit the students in our K-2 math classrooms.
My Project
There are 24 K-2 classrooms in our school. This year the teachers will receive training in the implementation of math fact fluency centers, calendar math time, Number Talks, and guided math small group instruction. We would like to add the Hello Numbers books and Plush Numbers resources into this training.
In Mrs. S's fourth grade classroom, these resources have already been used by the students in all four of the areas mentioned above. The fourth grade students are so excited about the plush numbers, they want to share the numbers with the younger classes and become math peer tutors.
Many of our classes have book buddy partners in which students in older classes mentor younger students to learn to read. We want to mentor younger students to learn to love numbers and know their math facts.
We already have staff development in place to train teachers in the use of the Hello Numbers books and plush numbers, AND we will have students who can support other students as well.
Donations to this project will benefit hundreds of students in multiple classrooms by growing math leaders and teachers in Mrs. S's class to mentor other students who will become math leaders and teachers as well.
In addition, the materials are a wonderful resource that can be used by teachers over and over to sustain confidence and comfort with numbers for their future students as well. This is a project designed to "pay it forward."
Help us help students to love numbers.
