Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Yes! Thanks to the generosity of so many people, my students are learning to appreciate music by listening, playing, and singing. But we still need more resources to make their music education more meaningful.
My students vary in their personalities, abilities, and limitations.
We work in a cluster program on the south side of Chicago. This school serves approximately 300 students, 67.7% of whom receive special education services. Over three-fourths of students are of low socioeconomic status. In terms of ethnic and racial composition, 67.7% of students are Latino, so emphasis has been placed on culturally relevant teaching. This year marks the start of a newly constructed music program that currently serves all students who receive Special Education services, and General Education students in grades from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Students are very excited to have music and love to play music. The program is especially important for the students who receive Special Education services and have responded to the program positively.
My Project
Music is a unique discipline that requires not only knowing relevant musical information, but also applying this information by playing instruments, singing, listening actively to music, and learning music literacy. Students have already begun singing, playing simple percussion instruments, and listening to music. This time I am requesting several instructional CD's and music activities, classroom instruments, and a student flute. One of my third grade students is learning recorder at an incredibly rapid rate and would like to play flute. The rest of the resources are primarily for my students with severe and profound disabilities, so that they may move and respond to music, despite limitations.
Having quality materials for a music program that is just beginning is important not only for teaching the current students, but also for maintaining the program for years to come.
It is the hope of the school and the music program that, as a result of playing, students will become lifelong lovers and appreciators of music, will learn to follow routines, and will understand the role that music plays in culture and society.
