Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom. is a self-contained special education classroom, made up of students in 6th-8th grade. The students in the room have a variety of academic skills, levels, and abilities. However, many of the students in our room struggle with basic reading skills.
The students in our clas are very energetic, motivated, and hard-working students.
They strive to do well in school and encourage one another daily. The students range in academic and ability levels tremendously, making differentiated-instruction our most commonly used phrased! Students are grouped based on their academic levels and needs.
In reading, the students range from a beginning reader level to an eighth grade reading level. What this means is that our beautifully, color-coded library, cannot simply meet the needs of every student in our room. The demographics of the school leans further in one direction than another. The general student population come from homes of more than one language, and 92% of the student body receives free or reduced fee lunch. There is always a need for resources in our classrooms, as a handful of our families require the additional support.
My Project
The students in our class all have a variety of learning needs. To help me reach each student in the room, most of our day is taught through the use of centers. Having five permanent iPads in our classroom would help strengthen the reading skills of many of our students. Currently, our classroom has subscriptions to multiple tablet applications, many in which strengthen the basic reading skills, aide in student comprehension, and build fluency. However, our students have access to technology resources for only 40 minutes a week, just barely enough time for us to login!
Having access to these iPads daily would allow students to complete research assignments in class, help assist the struggling writers in the classroom with speech-to-text applications, provide ample opportunities for the use of our application subscriptions, as well as provide audio books for our auditory learners. There are countless opportunities for these iPads to be used throughout the day, and will greatly make a difference!
Any donation will greatly improve the learning of the students in our class!
We are continuously striving to meet the yearly goals of each of our students, as well as making sure that they are well prepared for their futures. Many of our students are off to high school next year, with labor intensive work on it's way! We want to be sure that when provided any opportunity, our students are well-equipped to becoming successful adults within their own community.
