My students need books that are on their reading level that relate to social studies events and people, as well as bookshelves to hold the books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Since I am starting this year at a new school and teaching a new grade level, I hope to provide my fifth grade students with a learning environment that fosters a love of reading. My goal is to build a classroom library that all my students love to visit!
My students are two classes of about 20 fifth grade students in a suburban district outside of Houston.
I work in a team teaching setting, so my team teacher works with our students on math and science. Although my district does have vast resources, our school is a Title I school, with about 65% of students living in poverty. However, our students do not allow economic disadvantages to stand in the way between them and success - last year, while my students were in fourth grade, about 98% of them passed the reading STAAR test. My school is a relatively new school (7 years old) that prides itself on involving the community and parents in the events at school. I cannot wait to get this year started with my star students and improve their love of reading.
My Project
The books, bookshelves, and other materials I am requesting will help my students learn about American history that we discuss in social studies, while growing as readers. I am excited to highlight the interdisciplinary connection between these two subjects. Part of our reading curriculum requires students to have book bags with 2-3 books in them. One of the books will be the book the student is currently reading that is on his/her independent reading level. The other book will be their "on deck" book that the students will read next. The third book will be a social studies book. Students will not be required to read books specifically about what we are learning, but can explore their own interests in history.
By integrating reading into our social studies curriculum and social studies into our reading curriculum, I will be able to set my students up for success in both areas. Nonfiction is a common area of struggle among elementary-aged students, so these books can help them grow as readers.
Your donations to this project will help my students get the extra push I know they will need this year.
Although they were successful on standardized testing last year, it will be a challenge for me to continue to push them to grow as readers. These books will help my students reach the next level of understanding as they read since they will help build background knowledge as well as provide an opportunity for connections.
