This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do."- John Wooden - Far too often, individuals with disabilities are looked at based upon what they cannot do. When poverished conditions are added to the equation, those restrictions are magnified. Help erase the "dis" in disability.

I’m an Adapted Physical Education teacher who works with students with mild to severe disabilities (Autism, Intellectual Disability, Orthopedic Impairment, etc.) in 5 different schools of a very low socio-economic area.

Though the grades range from pre-school through 12th grade, many of my students’ developmental levels are far below that of there actual age. Because of the all to common low income levels of the families these children are not exposed to many of the activities, sports, and any typical playground equipment that some children take for granted. Children have the right to a free and appropriate education, but they should also have the right to experience some of the educational advantages that non-poverished areas benefit from, such as modern technology.

My Project

I am requesting a tablet to introduce on-the-go technology in the field of Adapted Physical Education. In the past, students were exposed to sports often time through videos and movies on a television inside a classroom, then required to retain the knowledge when moving out to the field of play, not able to immediately resource the video for refresher information. Beyond immediate exposure to new activities, a tablet out in the field would allow for immediate visual feedback when a student is learning a new skill, such as running, leaping, hopping, skipping, etc. They can be videoed while performing the skill, and immediately watch themselves on video for specific feedback. Studies have shown that individuals with disabilities display significant levels of attachment when watching videos of themselves performing an activity, as opposed to watching someone else perform the same activity. This allows more of a relationship to what they are watching and a greater chance at success.

A tablet will allow exposure of a broader world to children whose worlds are limited developmentally and economically.

It can help them "grow." Along with the multiple direct benefits to the students, a multifunctional device, such as a tablet, will allow for the immediate collection of student data and information on physical skills, translating into more accurate and effective educational plans, therefore, increasing chances of success.
