Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students favorite part of class is when they learn something new. For wind and strings players, the exciting part is learning a new note. For percussion players, it's learning a new instrument.
This project is for my middle school band students specifically.
They are excited to start band and strings when they get to 4th grade and work hard to progress on their instrument. My students are eager to learn all they can about their instruments, and are always asking if they can try new things.
My Project
The items I am asking for are for my percussionists (drummers). They need equipment including a xylophone, gong, mallets, practice pads, and a cowbell beater. At the moment, they are the only group of students that don't have instruments to practice at home. They also don't have all of the instruments they need in class to practice on to be ready for high school.
The second part of the project is new music. I picked out music that will be interesting for the percussion section, so they can use their new instruments in new exciting music!
High school percussion sections can be selective, so if students are unfamiliar with some of the different instruments (xylophone, gong, etc.) they may not make it into the better bands, and it wouldn't be their fault.
I want them to have all of the experiences and opportunities that percussionists at other, possibly better funded, schools have. They have the willingness to learn, they just need the opportunity.
