I work with students aged 8-10 who are diagnosed with autism.
They are loving children who are always motivated to learn yet sometimes need some extra time for sensory activities. If there is ever any down time in our classroom the students look towards our sensory corner as a way to play and touch and practice processing the senses they are using to explore different parts of the corner. Students in my classroom also look forward to the end of each day so that we can participate in a group sensory time using shaving cream, play doh, moon sand, and sensory bags and bottles. My students yearn for this time in order to get the sensory input they need, yet I do not have as many sensory toys and activities that would benefit them the most.
My Project
My students need a portable stereo, headphones, snap bags, moon sand, and sensory tools. These materials will benefit my students greatly. They can use the snap bags to give them the sensory needs to help them focus during group lessons. My students can also go to the sensory corner to help them calm down and take a break if the classroom is becoming too much for them at the moment. Students will use this corner and the items in it on a daily basis and allow them to practice using their senses in a safe environment within the classroom.
This project will make a huge difference to my students this year and years after.
Through the use of these sensory items, students can explore the classroom in ways that they have not been able to in the past.
