My students need more technology & sensory in the classroom. My students would greatly benefit from a desk top computer, an iPad, 2 iPods, and 6 pairs of headphones.
"Be the change you want to see in the world"
I believe in a world where diversity is embraced, loved & respected. I am determined to do the best I can to establish a classroom, where my students have a teacher who will advocate for them and the things they need to meet their maximum potential.
When you've met one child with Autism, they say you've met ONE child with Autism because two are not the same.
This year I have the privilege of teaching 6 wonderful unique children grades 3-5, ages 7-10 all with Autism. I have one student who is verbal, if you ask her a yes or no question she will certainly use the power of those two words to let you know how she feels! She is smiley, out going and loves to dance around and help the best she can. I have another boy, who is taller then me, big with a gentle spirit. He doesn't say complete words, but he certainty does his best to get his feelings across. He loves to paint, draw and scribble. I have another little boy who is filled with energy, ready to play, his favorite thing to do is jump like a frog. These are just some examples of the personalities I have in my classroom. They all have social, and cognitive delays but are filled with life and potential. They love sensory filled, interactive activities- especially technology.
My Project
We are requesting a desk top computer, an iPad, 2 iPods and 6 pairs of headphones. Last year I was able to raise enough money to buy two iPads for my classroom. So far my current class loves them. This little device is able to cater to the needs and levels of different children. Whether it's learning to write , counting, learning letters, sorting or enjoying a painting application, there is something to fit each students needs and interest. My dilemma this year is ALL of my students want it use them and I only have two.
This year I have a vision to create a time in the day where students can go from station to station using technology. I am hoping to set up visual/ audio books on the computer to teach students early literacy skills such a fluency. I would like another station to be filled with iPads to work on individual interactive applications across different subjects and lastly a station where students can listen to sensory music such as the ocean, instruments, nature sounds etc while completing a sensory activity such as playing with rice, sand or water.
Technology in the class room, especially to fulfill my technology stations will help in a variety of ways.
First they will be able to work on meeting their individual educational goals in interactive and attractive ways for them. The music and sensory area is something I've excited about, because many children with Autism experience sensory overloads which make it very difficult for them to focus and attend. Structured sensory activities will help my students overcome their challenges and focus.
