Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are members of the most technologically advanced generation of students to ever step foot in a classroom, yet their access to technology for practical means, particularly and especially for growing their academic and literacy skills, is greatly limited.
I teach a dedicated group of juniors and sophomores in the Watts community, who work each day to overcome the tremendous financial, social and environmental barriers that have been placed in their way.
The more that I get to work with and know my students, the more proud and excited I find myself by their natural ambition, curiosity, and desire to explore life and its endless boundaries. The English classroom is a unique space in that it allows students to engage with a variety of aspects of the written word-- from analysis to poetry to creative writing-- and everything in between.
My students are strong proponents of technology and essentially any reason to learn about or interact with it in the classroom. A document camera and PowerPoint clicker will be invaluable tools to my students, as they will enable me us bring technology our my classroom in a way that is both applicable and valuable to students.
My Project
I am requesting 1 document camera to help them learn annotation and close reading skills and 1 PowerPoint clicker to enable me to offer dynamic class presentations.
A document camera will enable me to model a number of valuable literacy and analysis skills for my students. From constructing short compositions such as paragraphs and thesis statements, to modeling analytic close reading strategies, identifying poetic and rhetorical devices, and working through challenging vocabulary, students will be able to watch as I actively engage in and teach these skills and others step-by-step, in real time. This practice will help students to be in a much better position to engage with and practice these skills on their own, with the goal of mastering them by the end of the year.
A PowerPoint clicker will allow me to create digital presentations for students that include multi-media elements such a videos, photos, audio, and animations. Presenting information through this medium will make it interactive and enjoyable for students, who are far more likely to learn when they are enjoying themselves while doing it!
Among the many challenges that my students face, the struggle for equitable access to education is one of the most brutal and unrelenting.
For many of our students, their education is their only means of escaping a life of violence, poverty and marginalization. Providing them with these materials is an active step in helping to make that happen.
